Session Synopsis
IT departments and facilities managers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and cut costs – this session offers them practical advice on how to progress towards an efficient, green data centre, using examples of real-life data centres around the world.
Everyone seems to be talking about green data centres but what does that really mean? With every vendor touting green solutions, how does the data centre manager decide what will genuinely contribute to creating an environmentally friendly data centre? Where can the greatest savings be made in technology, facilities, cooling? Most importantly, can eco-savings be made alongside cost savings without a large initial investment?
Understanding what is possible is paramount. A thorough review of the data centre will provide the organisation with a full knowledge of where the inefficiencies are and what can be corrected but how is this best undertaken?
The eco-friendliness of a data centre is commonly measured in Power Usage Efficiency (PUE). PUE targets of 1.6 are achievable in the UK but this is certainly not the reality at the present time, with many data centre managers struggling for a PUE of 2.0. What can be achieved depends upon what stage the data centre build is at large legacy data centres can be greatly improved with some small updates to the facilities and technology but the most efficient data centre generally needs to be built from scratch to take advantage of the best locations and design. How should the data centre manager decide where to make savings first?
Using examples of pioneering eco-data centres from around the world including Hitachis newest Yokohama data centre and customer data centres in the UK, Alec Bruce, Eco-Solutions Champion at Hitachi Data Systems will discuss application of both pragmatic and advanced technologies needed to create the eco-data centre from optimising IT to advanced monitoring systems and solar panels and the different steps necessary for success.
Who should attend this session?
IT directors, data centre managers, CIOs, CTOs, facilities managers, heads of storage, heads of IT
What will delegates learn from this session?
What steps are needed to create a cost-effective, environmentally friendly data centre with a CPU of 1.6 from the low-hanging fruit to the long-term plan – and what can be learnt from existing green data centres around the world.
Session date: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - 10:30am
