Data centre resilience, availability and security: Successful integration for customer availability

Mark has sixteen years experience in security, risk management and consultancy. He began his career within the UK Government as a member of HM Forces (Army) where he specialised in security management, progressing through the ranks and gaining a wide range of experience in various elements of security, including physical, logical and key-point consultancy.
Mark also fulfilled a number of specialised geo-political analytical roles in the UK, Europe and sub-continental Asia. Upon leaving the Army in 2005, Mark moved into the commercial sector as the Security & Export Compliance Manager for Harris Communications with responsibility for EMEA defence sector operations. In order to broaden his commercial experience, Mark then moved into specialised security and risk management consultancy, advising QinetiQ against animal rights extremism, prior to joining SunGard in May 2007.
Mark’s current responsibilities include all aspects of internal SunGard security, incorporating risk management, physical, technical, personnel and logical security. Mark also provides the focal point of contact for SunGard customers who have compliance, security, business continuity and data protection concerns. He is further responsible for the management of SunGard’s internal Business Continuity Management and played the lead role in SunGard’s BS25999 certification program.
Recently attaining full membership of the BCI and a member of a number of professional security bodies, Mark holds numerous security qualifications and is currently working towards an IT Security degree.
Session Synopsis
With 1,600 plus customers – 600 of whom required high-end managed services – the integrity and security of SunGard’s 23 locations is as vital to the operational confidence and physical well being of clients as the rest of SunGard’s award-winning , network of communications and facilities.
Nowhere is this more apparent than when devising a data centre security strategy to meet, not only SunGard’s own exacting standards, but the various requirements of a multi–sector customer base comprising large corporates through to SMEs.
Careful planning is essential, as is finding the right organisation to work with. In keeping with its reputation as an award winning innovator in the industry, most recently demonstrated by attaining CIR’s 2008 Data Centre Strategy of the Year, and 10 years Excellence Awards, SunGard chose to work closely with Honeywell Security Solutions to develop its enhanced integrated security solution to be rolled out during a three year implementation.
Not only have data security issues never been so prominent. From SunGard’s perspective, the right security solution has a direct bearing upon its wider remit to ensure resilience across all data centres to ensure optimum choice and availability for customers.
