Paul Rose,Principal Consultant Engineer, Mentor Graphics Corporation

Paul Rose achieved his Mechanical Engineering Degree from The City University in 1987.  Paul has spent the last 15 years working for Mentor Graphics Corporation, Mechanical Analysis Division (formerly Flomerics Ltd) specialising in the application of CFD to the design of the built environment and electronic equipment.

Prior to this he worked for the Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) in a role that covered both physically and numerical modelling

Currently, Paul is a Principal Consultant Engineer in the engineering team of the Mechanical Analysis Division, training and supporting the user base to enhance the accessibility of thermal analysis to engineering designer.  Over this time he has gained experience, not only in the use of software, but also of the general design processes and the best way to apply the CFD techniques to the real world problems encountered by engineers everyday – particularly in the overlap between electronics equipment and data centres.

Session Synopsis

This presentation illustrates how computer simulation can aid the design of energy efficient Data Centres.  By creating a model of a data centre before building a number of scenarios can be investigated quickly and at low cost.

The presentation will show the effect of design changes on the general environment and their impact on the cooling provided to the cabinets.

We will focus on:

  • Optimising the cooling performance of the data centre
  • Aiming to reduce the energy consumption of the HVAC systems
  • Investigating the operational effects of HVAC system failure

The work was carried out using a commercially available software package (FLOVENT) and aims to show the benefits to the designer and facility managers before construction and during day to day operation of data centres.

Who Should Attend?

This presentation should be attended by anyone involved in the design and day to day operation of data centres with particular impact on those involved in maintaining the environmental conditions.  The will see how computer simulation can be used in new and existing data centres to improve operational conditions and costs.

Session date: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - 3:00pm
